Embedded Systems and Software

Vak
2008-2009

The course first introduces the notion of and some basic concepts in embedded systems and software. It then deals with basic components that are found in all embedded systems. Groups of students are asked to select one of these components, study it in more detail, and present their findings in a short presentation. The course goes on with the discussion of a particular platform and a particular application. In a second part, the courses focuses on methods and tools to translate sequential application code to equivalent parallel specification code, and to map this specification code on a multi-core platform. In a third part – that is integrated with the second part – the course takes the form of laboratory hands-on sessions in which the translator and mapper are used to translate the application discussed in the first part onto a platform, also introduced in the first part.

*Method: * lectures, presentations, and hands-on.

*Examination: * There is no traditional written exam. The final mark consists of three parts: co-operative attitude during lectures, student presentation, and hands-on work, all equally weighed.

*Objective: * The Embedded Systems and Software course intends to introduce students to state-of-the-art methods and tools to design, program, and use embedded systems.

Literature: power point class notes and book excerpts.
