Description

The philosophical curriculum in late ancient schools of philosophy combined introductory science with a selection of works from the philosophical canon, as well requiring basic rhetorical skills. This combination of science and humanities subjects aimed at the best possible development of individual intellectual capacities. In this course we shall trace the historical development that produced the full 6th century AD curriculum of the Alexandrian school, assess whether and how science and humanities interacted throughout the curriculum, and what its impact was on both science and philosophy. We shall read a wide variety of texts discussing and/or exemplifying the curriculum at various stages of its development.
