Description

What is monasticism? What kinds of monasticisms are there? What are/ were the social, economic and political circumstances in a monastery? How did monasticism influence mainstream religion? What is the place of monasteries in the 21st century?
In the first half of this course the broad topic of monasticism will be discussed in a series of seminars in which the monasticisms of major and minor religions (Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Christianity, etc.) will feature. We will distinguish broader themes, commonalities and differences: for this active participation is required.
In the second half students will have picked a subject or theme related to the topic of monasticism and will give a presentation of 30 minutes. The topic of the presentation will then be discussed by all students. An essay either on the same topic or on another is to be handed in by the end of term.
