Description

Lecture series:
1. The concept of a Middle East economy – a critical discussion
2. The impact of Europe: trade, loans and investments
3. The effects of war and occupation
4. Economic nationalism
5. State-led import substitution industrialization
6. Land ownership and redistribution
7. The oil industry
8. Population growth as a problem and asset
9. Labour migration (out and in) and remittances
10. Neoliberalism and the opening up of markets
11. The rentier states
12. The role of the army in the economy

In the first two tutorials the teams of students are required to make an in-depth SWOT (strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats) analysis of one of the countries in the region.
On the basis of these SWOT analyses they are required to draw up a positive and a negative scenario for the economic development of “their” country in 2020.
Both documents (the analysis and the scenario) are shaped in such a way that they could be submitted as advice to high-level decision makers.

Mode of instruction

Lecture and tutorials

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Assessment method

Tutorials 30%, Exam 70%.

There are no resits for the tutorials, there is a resit for the exam.
