Prerequisites: Portugese 1 and 2

Description

This Portuguese language course develops written and oral communication skills acquired over the course of Portuguese I and II. Topics concerning the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world in global context are integrated into language learning through an interactive programme of language acquisition.

Course objectives

This course covers four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, to an high intermediate level. Course book and other additional, including authentic, materials will be used in the development of communication skills through practical written and oral exercises (individual and group-based). The course will expand students’ knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and awareness of register. Students will develop key skills, such as presentation skills in Portuguese, team work, working towards deadlines. These are integrated into language-specific, practical application of language skills in a variety of contexts, such as for example report writing; debating etc.
Target level for Portuguese III in terms of the Common European Framework: B1/B2

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Assessment method

* 30 mins written class test=20% of overall mark * Class/group presentation=20% of mark * Final oral exam=20% of mark * Final 1h written exam=40% of mark

Written tests will involve combination of fill-the gap exercises/linguistic tests/reading comprehension and/or short composition.
Orals: group and individual presentations, followed by Q&As.
