This is an elective course that will deal with a series of Physics topics drawn from modern technology areas. The intention is to give you an appreciation of the Physics that underpins a given technology, to examine in some detail the Physical principles and ideas and to use chunks of the underlying theory to make quantitative estimates.

1. Global Navigation Satelite Systems (e.g., GPS, Galielo)
2. Vacuum: how it is created, measured and sustained
4. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
5. Solar cells
6. Microscopy including:
· Scanning Electron Microscopy
· Transmission Electron Microscopy
· Atomic Force Microscopy
· Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
Leerdoelen (Course Objectives)
• Link a familiar technology with aspects of the underlying Physics
• Get an appreciation of the relevant physical phenomena and principles
• Develop a qualitative understanding of the theory
• Develop a familiarity with some of the equations (simplified versions)
• Use the relevant basic equations to make order of magnitude estimates of physical properties and link them to the application at hand.
• Evaluate and synthesize information to describe the Physics of a current technological application of choice.
• Organize your findings in a report and present them.

Lectures and Blackboard material in English. Students may use either English or Dutch for all assignments and in class.
The mark on the course is evaluated as follows:
• On-line quizzes right after lecture time: 20% (1 test/session, total 10 tests, bonus marks available): lowest score is dropped and replaced by the average of the rest of the quiz scores
• Homework 20% (1set/topic, total 5 tests, marked out 110 ).
• Project: 60% (30% project report, 30% presentation)
o Every project report gets one mark. This means that one shares mark with partner.
o Individual mark for the presentation.
Opportunity for re-take: There will be an opportunity for an individual exam in August, partly written and partly oral. This will test knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the lectures. Marks from the project, homework or quizzes cannot be used.
N.B. Due to the nature of the assessment an honor’s code applies. This means that a student must certify that what they submit own work in compliance with the University’s code of conduct on fraud and plagiarism.
