Description

This practical lecture series starts with the basics of construction history, ‘Standing up Archaeology’.
Four tutorials will deal with:

  1. Stone and brick (types, bonds, ages, finishing).
  2. Timber (types, marks, walls, floors, ceilings and roofs).
  3. Foundation and windows.
  4. Heritage and restoration.

Subsequently, there will be two practical exercises, in which will be explained how to make a documentation and description of one element of an existing building.

Course objectives

Using the element mentioned before and placing it in a functional and historical context will result in a final paper to be delivered in May.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Tutorials;

  • Student presentation.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 28 hours of lectures and tutorials (2 ec);

  • 140 pages of literature (1 ec);

  • Midterm exam and final paper (2 ec).

Assessment method

  • Midterm exam (50%);

  • Final Paper (50%).

Both are allowed to be written in either Dutch or English.
The essay needs to be at least a 5.5: no compensation is allowed.

A retake is only possible for the final essay, but only if all other requirements have been met.
