Admission requirements

Dutch – Beginners (Dutch 100) or equivalent basic knowledge of Dutch: level A2 (Common European Framework). Students who do not meet this prerequisite should contact the instructor regarding the required competencies before course allocation.

Description

Dutch - Elementary (Dutch 200) is a Dutch language course that enables students to communicate adequately in Dutch about ideas and opinions, both in social and in professional situations. The lessons will focus on oral and written skills.

The course is organized around interactive and communicative activities that will allow students to build all skills in the most effective way. Class proceedings will focus on submerging students in real-world Dutch language.

Grammatical structures, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions will also be integrated into the learning process in meaningful contexts and in exercises. Furthermore an important aspect of the course will be the cultural knowledge about The Netherlands.

The content of the course is based on coursebooks together with supplementary material prepared by the instructor.

Course objectives

In terms of the CEFR of the Council of Europe, the student will have reached B1 level, which means “enough language to get by, with sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself with some hesitation and circumlocutions on topics such as family, interests, work, travel, and current events”.

More specifically, the student:

  • can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc;

  • can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken;

  • can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest;

  • can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Mode of instruction

This course builds up the language skills of students who have already a basic knowledge of Dutch and develops the full range of communication skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing. Course contents are grammar practice, vocabulary building, listening, speaking and writing activities. The method of teaching is communicative and classes will be conducted exclusively in Dutch, enabling students to learn and practice the new grammatical structures and vocabulary covered in each session. In order to develop and consolidate skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, classes will be highly interactive. Students will often work in pairs or groups and give oral presentations to practice their language skills.

The course requires a lot of self-study. A substantial amount of independent study will be expected: several hours daily should be devoted to Dutch outside the classroom to complete work set by the instructor and practice reading, listening and writing skills.

A blackboard site will support the course.
