The attention paid to entrepreneurship in economics and business has steadily been increasing during the last decades. Entrepreneurship is considered an important driver for national, regional and economic development as well as facilitating social cohesion linked to personal choice and empowerment for disadvantaged members of society. Policy makers and practitioners are seeking to promote the supply of entrepreneurs in order to encourage economic benefits such as employment, wealth creation and competition, as well as social benefits.
Entrepreneurship is a multi-dimensional concept that takes a variety of forms and appears in both small and large firms, in new firms and established family firms, in the formal and informal economy, in innovative and conventional concerns and in all regions and economic subsectors. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of entrepreneurship in different settings in order to derive meaningful implications for policy makers and practitioners.
This course offers basic knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship. We will analyse entrepreneurship from different perspectives (e.g. psychological perspective and process perspective) and in different forms (e.g. in the form new venture creation). In each lecture, we will discuss entrepreneurship in a particular setting, its related characteristics and its value within the boundary of such a setting. In order to help students absorb academic knowledge, guest lecturers are invited to provide practical insights into certain topics.
This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship (however, this course is NOT a step-by-step guide for starting your own business). This course is suited for students who expect to deal with entrepreneurship and small business in their future careers. This could, for example, be as an entrepreneur/small business owner, an entrepreneurial employee in a large firm, a consultant, a policy maker or a researcher.
