Course on Laboratory Animal Science

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor Biomedical Sciences.

  • Knowledge of the basic subjects of biology up to 18.75 ECTS (=500 study hours) including at least 7.5 ECTS on anatomy/zoology and 7.5 ECTS on physiology.

Description

Period Dutch course: 1 October 2018 - 19 October 2018 and 4 March 2019 - 22 March 2019
Period English course: 26 November 2018 - 14 December 2018 and 13 May 2019 - 31 may 2019

During the course following subjects will be assessed:

  • Legal and ethical frameworks for the use of laboratory animals;

  • Literature search and systematic review;

  • Welfare and quality systems;

  • Behaviour, anatomy, physiology, and diseases of common and less common laboratory animal species;

  • Anesthesia, analgesia and humane endpoints;

  • Gnotobiology;

  • Husbandry, care and handling of the commonly used laboratory animals;

  • Genetics and genetical modifications;

  • Animal models;

  • Alternatives to animal experiments and statistics;

  • Points of view of animal protection organizations.

Course objectives

The student:

  • Uses basic facts and principles that are essential for the humane use and care of laboratory animals and for the quality of research to be applied in research practice and in discussions.

  • Uses basic facts and principles that are essential for the humane use and care of laboratory animals and for the quality of research to be applied in research practice and in discussions.

  • Shows communication skills in order to write and present coherently and convincingly while taking into account modern presentation and writing principles.

  • Shows professional conduct: being critical yet constructive and eager to improve oneself and in doing so contributing to the learning process of other students.

Mode of instruction

Lectures and hands-on workshops, live demonstrations, a tour of the animal facilities and an ethical review session.

Course load

Total course load is the amount of EC’s multiplied with 28 hours.

Assessment method

Summative assessment:

  • Written exam (multiple choice and essay questions)

  • Presentation and discussion in groups
