Description
Der Buchdruck, erfunden von Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts, hatte einen tiefen und langfristigen Einfluss auf den Markt für literarische Texte im frühmodernen Deutschland. Durch den Buchdruck wurde es plötzlich möglich, Texte in großer Anzahl und in kurzer Zeit für ein potenziell sehr breites Publikum herzustellen. In dem Seminar gehen wir der Frage nach, wie sich der Markt für gedruckte literarische und pragmatische Texte in Deutschland zwischen dem 15. und 18. Jahrhundert entwickelt hat. Zu diesem Zweck werden wir den Markt für ausgewählte Genres wie etwa Romane, Novellistik, Sachbücher, Predigten, wissenschaftliche und polemische Werke etc. im Verlauf der Jahrhunderte analysieren. In regelmäßigen Abständen werden wir unsere theoretischen Erkenntnisse mit den in der Bibliothek der Universität Leiden erhaltenen Büchern aus der Frühen Neuzeit abgleichen. An den Originalen analysieren wir die Ausstattung der Bücher. Dazu nehmen wir Illustrationen, Inhaltsverzeichnisse, Register und typografische Merkmale der Bücher in den Blick.
Course objectives
Students
are familiar with the historical development of the early modern book market and its relevance for German literature and its various forms and genres
are able to reconstruct the evolution of a literary genre and its publication formats by using the most relevant digital databases (VD16, VD17, USTC)
are able to develop and present a research question related tot he topic of this course
are able to present their knowledge and insights in German at an academic level, both orally and in writing
Research MA students should reveal in their coursework a more nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between social formations and cultural productions by means of a more detailed and thorough theoretical/methodological framework.

active participation in the weekly seminars (10%)
oral presentation about an early modern book from the Leiden University Library (10%)
written paper (5000 woorden): (80%)
Research MA students will have to write an extra 3000 word paper on a topic to be decided in consultation with the tutor.
Resit
In case of an insufficient essay, the essay shas to be revised/ rewritten.

Registration
Enrolment through uSis is mandatory. You can register until two weeks after classes have started however students are advised to register as soon as possible and preferably before the start of the course. In the case of electives: please be aware that most electives have a maximum amount of students who can enroll. Do not approach the course instructor in case the class is full. You will automatically be put on a waiting list.
