2018-2019

Admission requirements

First year BA Linguistics completed.

Description

Javanese is an Austronesian language spoken on the Indonesian island Java. East Javanese, which is part of the Javanese dialect continuum, forms the focus of this course. It is spoken in Surabaya, Malang and a number of other Indonesian cities. The language is also widely used in the Indonesian social media. Several aspects of East Javanese will be addressed during the course, including its phonological features, verbal morphology, speech levels, and diglossic relation with standard Indonesian. Many of these characteristics are Areal Features that are important to take into account for linguistic research in a broader Island Southeast Asian context.

Course objectives

  • Students name structural features of East Javanese and can identify them as typical Areal Features or not.

  • Students describe a structural pattern in East Javanese using terminology with language-specific definitions.

  • Students gloss and translate an East Javanese text.

  • Students plan and structure a descriptive paper.

  • Students compile a short descriptive paper.
