Other students should consult their study advisor whether this course can count towards their degree. All MA students can take this course as an extracurricular course.

Description

The course will consist of an introduction to and a reading of (selected passages from) later Indian Tantric Buddhist literature. Emphasis will be placed on the compatibility of esoteric and non-esoteric Mahāyāna Buddhism, through an examination of tantric meditation practice, doctrine, epistemology, and apologia.

Course objectives

Students will gain an awareness of the methods to handle unpublished textual material; acquire advanced concepts of critical editing; gain knowledge of doctrinal problems in the early mature phase of esoteric Buddhism; become better at reading śāstric/exegetical Sanskrit.
