Description

This course offers an introduction to the phonology of Modern English. Topics considered include allophonic variation, phonological rules and features, syllable and foot structure, stress and rhythm.

Course Objectives

Students gain insight into the phonological structure of Modern English. They learn that the realisation of English speech sounds and the ways in which these can be combined are governed by rules. These rules can be formulated using phonological features, and with the help of the units of syllable and foot.

Timetable

The timetable will be available from July 1 onwards on the Department website.

Mode of Instruction

One hour lecture and one hour seminar per week.

Assessment

Two in-term quizzes (20%), final written exam (80%); if the average quiz mark is lower than the mark for the final written exam, the latter will count for 100%.
