Hate crime & security Hate crime is a problem that can have deep impact on society and (percieved) security. It is one the most important threats to intethnic relations or – broader – to the relations between different minorities and dominant society. This course will explore several forms of hate crime, both violent (f.e. islamophobic or homophobic attacks) and non violent, like hate speech, incitement to hatred and violence.
The course will not only focus on the contemporary and most important forms of hate crime in The Netherlands, but also on patterns of (state) responses, like police responses, media responses, legal reactions and reactions of public administration. Focusing on The Netherlands includes attention for the international context: hate crime has strong international dimensions and this is also true for patterns of responses.
Students are expected to participate actively in the class meetings. By the end of the course students will do a (small) individual research, a presentation on their research design, ending in a final paper.
