Linguistics 5 (SYN) or a similar introduction to generative syntax
Description
Advanced English Generative Syntax follows on from the introductory course Ling 5 (SYN) and prepares the student for more detailed and specialised generative syntax courses in the Linguistics MA and MPhil curriculum. The course goes into familiar syntactic structures of Modern English in more detail and introduces a number of new concepts, especially the philosophy of the Minimalist Program.
Course objectives
Students acquire specialist knowledge of the generative analysis of some of the most important syntactic phenomena of Modern English and know how to comapare and contrast them with related phenomena in other European languages.
Students become acquainted with a number of different syntactic analyses and are able to evaluate them.

One hour lecture and one hour seminar per week.

In-term written paper (30%); written test (70%)
