Linguistics 6: Introduction to English Semantics

Admission requirements

A pass mark for Linguistics 2 or equivalent course.

Description

Introduction to basic concepts of English semantics, concentrating mainly on lexical semantics.We will consider entailment, synonymy, hyponomy, antonymy, presupposition and modality, and introduce formal logic.

Course objectives

Students become acquainted with general semantic concepts and are able to apply these to English.

Mode of instruction

One hour lecture and one hour seminar per week.

Assessment method

In-term written paper (30%); written test (70%)
