Admission requirements
This course is open for Master students in Latin American Studies or from other disciplines, who are interested in current political, socio-economic and cultural developments in Chile. Exceptionally some senior Bachelor students can also be accepted as they are involved (for instance in their bachelor thesis) with the Chilean reality. All students have to have a good command of Spanish.
Description
Each year a renowned Chilean professor is invited by the Department of Latin American Studies (LAS) to give a Master course. Depending on the guest’s specialization, the course can deal on different present-day subjects which are central to understand contemporary Chilean society. The visiting professor can be a modern historian as well as political scientist, sociologist, anthropologist, and an expert in modern cultural studies.
Each year around November will be announced at the LAS website the name of the visiting professor and the course’s subject.
Course objectives
To be able to assimilate in a relatively short period of time a specialized account about a specific socio-economic, political and cultural subject that is currently taking place in Chile. To write a paper based partly in Chilean local sources about one of the topics which have been studied during the course. To make a structured oral presentation in public in which an in-depth analysis is made about a particular article.
