Orientation on MCB Research

2011-2012

Admission requirements

A BSc in Biology or related subject (University or HLO), with a solid theoretical and practical training in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Microbiology.

Description

Oral presentations will be given by group leaders and researchers of the MCB track in four sessions, each concentrated around the following research themes: ‘Molecular and Developmental Genetics’, ‘Microbiology and Biotechnology’, ‘Animal Cells and Disease’, and ‘Plant Cell Physiology’.

Learning goals

Course objectives:
To get familiar with the research within the research groups participating in the MCB track, to get informed about frontiers of scientific research, to make the choice for a first MSc research project easier, and to make a concept program for the (2years) MCB MSc study.

Final qualifications:
A starting MSc student that has an overview of MCB research topics, and established his/her concept MCB MSc study program, and arranged his/her first Research Project.

Timetable

This course is scheduled in September 2011 (sessions on September 6, 9, 13 and 16 between 10.00 and 16.00) and in Februari 2012 (sessions on January 31 and February 3, 7 and 10 between 10.00 and 16.00).
The final program will be announced on Blackboard.

Mode of instruction

Lectures by MCB staff and PhD students

Assessment method

Of each session: a written report of maximally 2x A4 summarizing the main point of the presented research. In the report, it should be indicated within which research theme the student would like to perform a research project (2 alternative options should be indicated). The reports should be handed in at the examination of the course Fundamentals of MCB. The concept MCB MSc programs should be send by email to MCB coordinator Dr. Remko Offringa (r.offringa@biology.leidenuniv.nl).

Blackboard

The final schedule for this course will be announced during the introductory lecture by MCB coordinator Dr. Remko Offringa and will be placed on blackboard.
