Hands-on Research Experience in Museum Volkenkunde

Description

Under the guidance of the lecturer who is also curator for Classical South and Southeast Asia in the National Museum of Ethnology (Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde), the students work on a group of related objects from South or Southeast Asia in the collection of the museum. After an introduction into the subject, including visits to the museum and the depot of the museum, they describe the objects in the museum format and write an informative paper on the culture-historical background of one or more related objects.

Course objectives

  • Practical experience in a museum setting

  • Insight into the history of museum collections and the role of objects as cultural heritage

  • Advanced knowledge of and insight into the art and material culture of South and/or Southeast Asia in its cultural context

  • Improvement of academic writing skills
