Fysica van Moderne Technologie

Course
2014-2015

Omschrijving

This is an elective course that deals with a series of Physics topics drawn out of modern technology areas. Its intention is to give the student an appreciation of the Physics that underpins a given technology, to examine in more detail the Physical principles and ideas and to use chunks of the underlying theory to make quantitative estimates.

The topics covered in 2014 are
1) Global Positioning System (GPS)
2) Vacuum: how it is created, sustained and measured
3) Laser
4) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
5) Microscopy including Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Learning Outcomes:

  • Link a familiar technology with aspects of the underlying Physics

  • Get an appreciation of the relevant physical phenomena and principles

  • Develop a qualitative understanding of the theory

  • Develop a familiarity with some of the equations (simplified versions)

  • Use the relevant basic equations to make order of magnitude estimates of physical properties and link them to the application at hand.

  • Evaluate and synthesize information to describe the Physics of a current technological application of choice.

  • Organize your findings in a report and present them.
