Description:
This 2-week, intensive workshop comprises of lectures, supervised recording sessions, individual recording sessions by assignment, group discussions and listening sessions. The course ends with a group presentation. Subjects are: acoustic ecology – the ‘soundscape’, analytical listening, microphone and recording techniques (mono, stereo, surround), the recording as composition or performance, the history of field recordings as a source in music, film and other media, and the montage of and composing with recorded sound.

Learning targets:
After following this workshop, the student will have gained ability in analytical listening to urban and rural/natural soundscapes, ability in microphone techniques used outside a recording studio environment, knowledge of the theoretical frameworks of acoustic ecology, and an aesthetic consciousness regarding the use of field recordings as musical material. The student is able to make a composition using field recording independently or in a group, and is able to present that composition.
Studyload:
Leiden University students who join this course at the Royal Conservatoire, will complete the course with an additional assignment in order to meet the study requirements corresponding with 5 EC’s.
Schedule:
First and second semester. The lessons take place in the building of the Royal Conservatoire, Juliana van Stolberglaan 1, Den Haag (at a walking distance of Den Haag Centraal station). Inscribed students will be informed of the exact workshop dates and times by the teacher.
