World archaeology 3: Complex societies of the Mediterranean and Europe

Description

This lecture series focuses on the Classical world in the Mediterranean (including Egypt) and Europe from around 1500 BC to around 1500 AD.
The lectures address the emergence of the complex societies and their material cultures in Egypt, the Mediterranean and the Roman world, as well as the transition to the Christian and Muslim cultures in the Middle Ages.

Course objectives

Knowledge of the chronological and geographic framework of the development of complex societies and their cultural manifestations in the Mediterranean and Europe, as addressed in the lectures and in the book.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Tutorials.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 7×2 hours of lectures;

  • 7 case studies (presentations with questions and discussion)

  • around 300 pages of literature.

Assessment method

Written exam with multiple choice questions.

All exam dates (exams, retakes, paper deadlines etc.) can be found in the examination schedule.

  • O. Hupperetz et al. (eds), Keys to Rome. Wbooks (2014);

  • Additional literature will be distributed during lectures.
