Description

This course gives an insight into the origins of the historical styles of jazz music.Improvisation and swing play an essential role in this. In addition to this the social, cultural and economic backgrounds against which jazz developed will be explored. The usual historical classifications fall short when describing the developments in jazz during the last three decades. In class we will approach the historiographical problems that have arisen in de classical history of jazz. Possible alternatives will be presented for the approach and classification of contemporary jazz.

Schedule

Second semester. Classes take place at the Kamerlingh Onnes Building (Steenschuur 25, 2311 ES Leiden), room C014, Mondays from 18.45-20.15.

First lecture: Monday 1 February 2016.
Last lecture: Monday 21 March 2016.
Written test: Monday 4 April 2016 (also in C014, 18.45-20.15 hrs).
Please note: There is NO class on Monday 15 February!
