This course gives an insight into the origins of the historical styles of jazz music.Improvisation and swing play an essential role in this. In addition to this the social, cultural and economic backgrounds against which jazz developed will be explored. The usual historical classifications fall short when describing the developments in jazz during the last three decades. In class we will approach the historiographical problems that have arisen in de classical history of jazz. Possible alternatives will be presented for the approach and classification of contemporary jazz.
