Admission requirements

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies.

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passed Hindi 1 Beginners and Hindi 2 Pre-intermediate.

Description

Further development of Hindi language skills acquired in Hindi 1+2 to intermediate level. The course systematically expands vocabulary, grammar and language structures, leading to a deeper comprehension of style and usage. It focuses on language skills (speaking and writing) and performing more complex tasks such as comparing, narrating, describing, reasoning, and discussing topics beyond the immediate environment. Translation exercises involving more complex sentences. Simple formal and informal correspondence through letters and emails.
On the successful completion of the course, students will achieve A2+ or B1 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
B1 level of CEFR entails that the learner –
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Course objectives

  • Ability to contextualize grammar skills acquired in the first year of Hindi instruction.

  • Introduction to higher level of structural complexity of Hindi and finer details of language use.

  • Competence in comprehension of simple literary texts, carry out conversations in various social situations, and express views on topics of interest in contemporary standard Hindi idiom.

  • Extended Knowledge of Hindi vocabulary.

  • Ability to comprehend simple spoken instructions and voicemails.

  • Ability to express oneself in writing through simple letters or descriptions.

  • Apply this knowledge in translating sentences From English to Hindi or vice versa.

Mode of instruction

Two two hour tutorials every week

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or a tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Course Load

Total course load for this course is 5 EC (1 EC = 28 hours), this equals 140 hours, broken down by:
Attending classes: 48 hrs (4 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 92 hrs

Assessment method

Assessment and Weighing

Review of Hindi 3 Upper Intermediate will consist of following components:

  • Attendance, Class preparation and participation – 10 % of final grade

  • Homework and assignments – 10 % of final grade

  • Quizzes (2 quizzes – Grammar, Vocabulary, Translation, reading comprehension etc) – 30 % of final grade

  • Project (1 Project) – 10 % of final grade

  • Term End Oral Exam (Oral Proficiency Interview) – 15 % of final grade

  • Term End Written Exam (Grammar, Vocabulary, Translation, Reading comprehension, written expression etc.) – 25 % of final grade.
    To complete the final mark, please take notice of the following: the final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
    To pass the course, the average has to be 5.5 at least.

Resit

If the final grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is the possibility of a resit.
The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading and writing;

  • Written dialogue;

  • Vocabulary and grammar.

Remarks

For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason have to be discussed with the language instructor BEFORE the class takes place. Frequent absence will inevitably lead to lower participation grades, or denied access to the final exam.
This course uses Integrated communicative language learning method. Therefore active participation in the classroom activities is essential for successful learning outcomes.
