Practical Internship Psychology

Course
2016-2017

Entry requirements

  • Only open to MSc students in Psychology

  • Mandatory courses as specified in the Course and Examination Regulations.

Description

Students need to do a mandatory internship of 10 credits. Students can do an intern in an external organisation to fulfil this requirement. The division between a practical and a research internship is not always strict. A practical internship can center on a applied research question.
Within the organisation, a qualified staff member will be responsible for the daily supervision of the student. It is important that an internship contract is signed by the student, a staff member in the professional institution and the internship coordinator of the specialisation in order to formally describe the mutual agreement on the requirements for the internship.
A staff member of the university will supervise the internship on an individual basis or in group meetings. This university staff member is responsible for the grading of the internship. As part of the intake procedure of the internship within the university, the university staff member clarifyies the criteria for his or her final assessment of the internship.
In most cases mastering the Dutch language is necessary to intern in a Dutch professional institution. International students are advised to look for possibilities in international organisations in the Netherlands or abroad.

Course objectives

In the internship, students learn to:

  • apply their knowledge, understanding and problem solving abilities in a new and unfamiliar task environment within a broader (or multi-disciplinary) context related to their field of specialisation.

  • integrate knowledge and handle complexity by formulating judgements with incomplete or limited information. These judgments should reflect social and ethical responsibilities.

  • the internship also provides students an opportunity to learn how to communicate their judgements (and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these judgments) clearly and unambiguously to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Registration

Registration with the internship coordinator of the student’s specialisation.

Mode of instruction

280 practical hours

Assessment method

The student writes an internship report. Assessment by a university staff member and, if applicable, by the daily supervisor in the institute where the internship has taken place. The final assessment is by the university staff member based on a set of evaluation criteria specific for the Master specialisation of the student.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences has instituted that instructors use a software programme for the systematic detection of plagiarism in students’ written work. In case of fraud disciplinary actions will be taken. Please see the information concerning fraud.
