This course is an Honours Class and therefore in principle only available to students of the Honours College. There are a few places available for regular students.

Description

Clinical Technology is an emerging field where clinicians, engineers, and clinical physicists work closely together to improve health care. Think of imaging technology, such as MRI and CT. But clinical technology is also about minimally invasive surgery and medical devices, such as pacemakers and orthopaedic implants.

It will turn out that there is more to clinical technology than pure engineering: there are also ethical, sociological and juridical aspects and implications. In this Honours Class, we will present and analyse a number of cases in which state of the art clinical technology was developed and implemented by engineers, clinicians, and clinical physicists.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a comprehensive view on state of the art advances in clinical technology and its ethical, sociological and juridical aspects and implications.

Course Load

This course is worth 5 EC, which means the total course load equals 140 hours.

  • Lectures: 10 lectures of 4 hours
  • Literature reading: 5 hours per session
  • Session organization: 15 hours
  • Assignments & final essay: 40 hours

Assessment method

  • 20% Organising a session
  • 10% Active participation in the sessions
  • 70% Final essay of minimum 2000 words
