Social Science Perspectives on Cyber Security

Description

The main goal of this course is to provide students with a technical/engineering background with an understanding and conceptual toolkit of the aforementioned social sciences and their perspectives on the topic of cyber security, to enable them to (a) participate in the governance track with the right entry level knowledge , and/or (b) approach the research topic of their thesis (semester 4) from a multidisciplinary (i.e. combined technical and social scientific) perspective by providing them with a broader, social scientific lens on scientific research in general and cyber security in particular .

This course only targets CSA students with a technical/engineering background, except of the first sessions on history and philosophy of science: these will be for all students.

Course objectives

This course aims at providing students with a technical/engineering background with a basic understanding of:

  • The history of science and the emergence of different scientific disciplines, with a focus on (a) the social sciences, and (b) mathematics, computer and design science, including some of the fundamental questions and core issues addressed in the these sciences;

  • The key ways of working, the instruments available to researchers in (a) sociology, psychology and criminology, (b) political science, public administration and law, and © economics, business & management and organization science,

  • The most common methodologies used in each;

  • Examples of landmark studies and/or results from these social sciences.

  • Preliminary steps with regard to the application of the various social scientific methods and perspectives on the topic of cyber security.

Mode of instruction

Lectures, seminars, exercises, class discussion.

Course Load

3 EC.

Assessment method

Presentation (50%) and Assignment (50%).

No compensation is possible for assignments of 30% or more.

Resit
Students will be permitted to resit an examination if they have taken the first sit and have a mark lower than 5.5 or with permission of the Board of Examiners.

Resit written exam
Students that want to take part in a resit for a written exam, are required to register via uSis. Use the activity number that can be found on the ‘timetable exams’.

Yes, for posting slides of lectures, relevant literature and assignments.

Compulsory literature and literature for further consultation will be announced via Blackboard

Registration

Use both uSis and Blackboard to register for every course.
Register for every course and workgroup via uSis. Some courses and workgroups have a limited number of participants, so register on time (before the course starts). In uSis you can access your personal schedule and view your results. Registration in uSis is possible from four weeks before the start of the course.
