Replication Workshop

Course
2017-2018

Description

Purpose: The purpose of the replication workshop is to provide students with deeper insights into the research process and professionalism in research, by replicating existing pieces of research.

Content: First, two research articles in public administration or political science will be selected for replication. The participants of the replication workshop will reconsider the design and/or re-analyze the data from the original publication. They will examine such questions as: would the collection of additional data have improved the analysis? Would improvements in the operationalisation of central concepts be possible? Would another analytic technique have been more appropriate?

Second, students will select a published article for replication. A series of mini-lectures and workshop-style sessions will help students create a project plan, perform exploratory analysis, re-analyze the data, and execute a replication study that adds value to the original work. Best practices, helpful techniques, and ethical considerations will be discussed in these sessions and applied to the final project.

Course Objectives
After completion of this course students are able

  • to understand what replication means and implies for the practice of scientific research;

  • to design and manage the several stages in the research process in such a way that their own research can be replicated by others;

  • to evaluate research and research publications on their replicability.
