Mode of instruction

Seminar.

Attendance and active participation are obligatory for seminars. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convenors need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits, the Dutch railways in winter, etc.). In these cases it is up to the discretion of the convener(s) of the course whether or not the missed class will have to be made up with an extra assignment. The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

Course Load

Total course load: 5 EC x 28 hours = 140 hours

  • Classes: 13 × 2 hours: 26

  • Preparation of lessons and repeat treated matter: 12 × 6 hours: 72 hours

  • Preparation partial examination: 20 hours

Assessment method

There are two assessments: after the first block of the second semester, a mid-term exam (w) is taken that counts for 40% towards the final grade, and at the end of the second block of the second semester a final exam (w) follows that counts 60% towards the final grade. The examinations are written and consist of a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part, questions are asked about grammatical concepts and phenomena; the practical part deals with questions related to the grammatical analysis of the discussed topics in tutorials. The practical part of the exam also consists of unseen translation texts from and to Persian. The mid-term examination and the final examination can be retaken as one examination after the second block of the second semester.
