Material studies in Dutch archaeology

Course
2017-2018

Admission requirements

World archaeology 1 and World archaeology 3 obtained.

Description

This course deals with the most commonly found archaeological find materials in Dutch archaeology. In several formal lectures the material culture of the major archaeological periods is discussed, from handaxe till bartmann jug, and placed within a (North-West) European context.

During the practical sessions, flint from the Palaeolithic and ceramic from the Early Neolithic until the Modern era are analysed, described and drawn (sometimes photographed) according to modern scientific standards. The focus lies on the recognition of the most common types of flint and ceramic, and the systematic description of these artefacts.
