Admission requirements

Passing the following BA2 courses is required in order to participate in this course: – At least two BA2 seminars (not lectures) – BA2 Productie IIb – BA2 Studieverblijf Japan or BA2 Productie IIc

Description

The course consists of two components – six sessions of two hours each – that alternate every week

Component I: ‘Introduction to Working Environments’
Students are introduced to a variety of different working environments by guest speakers from the world of business, government, cultural industries etc. As preparation for these sessions students will be required to read the material provided on Blackboard.

Component II: ‘Business Japanese’
Students are introduced to the specific type of vocabulary and expressions that are customarily used in Japanese companies. This will include, but will not be limited to, self-introduction in the business situations, communication via telephone, and writing professional e-mails.

Course objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students with a hands-on introduction to the working environments that they might encounter in their future careers. It will confront them with the reality of the world outside the university, and help them to place the skills and knowledge acquired during the first two years of study in a different perspective. The ‘Business Japanese’ component builds on the acquired language proficiency, but offers an additional benefits, which may prove important on the job market.

Course Load

Total course load 5 EC x 28 hours= 140 hours

  • Lectures: 12 × 2 =24 hours

  • Assignment(s): 12 × 5 = 60 hours

  • Literature: 22

  • Preparation exam: 30 hours

  • Exam(s): 1×2= 4 hours

Assessment method

  1. Participation (20%)
  2. 6 webpostings after each guest appearance session (30%)
  3. Business Japanese final exam (50%)

All 3 elements must be passed to receive a passing grade for the course. The course grade will be determined based on the weighted average of course elements once all elements have been passed.

Resit

  1. There is no resit possibility for the ‘participation’ element. Students who will attend less than 8 out of the total of 12 sessions will fail the course
  2. Students who will fail to submit 6 webpostings will be able ‘resit’ this element by submitting a 2000 word paper based on the assigned readings.
  3. Resit final exam Business Japanese will be scheduled.
