Beschrijving (Description)

This is an elective course that will deal with a series of Physics topics drawn from modern technology areas. The intention is to give you an appreciation of the Physics that underpins a given technology, to examine -in some detail- the Physical principles and ideas and to use chunks of the underlying theory to make quantitative estimates. The topics to be covered in 2018
1. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (e.g., GPS, Galileo)
2. Laser
3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
4. Solar Cells
5. Microscopy including: · Scanning Electron Microscopy · Transmission Electron Microscopy · Atomic Force Microscopy · Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Leerdoelen (Course Objectives)

  • Link a familiar technology with aspects of the underlying Physics

  • Get an appreciation of the relevant physical phenomena and principles

  • Develop a qualitative understanding of the theory

  • Develop a familiarity with some of the equations (simplified versions)

  • Use the relevant basic equations to make order of magnitude estimates of physical properties and link them to the application at hand.

  • Evaluate and synthesize information to describe the Physics of a current technological application of choice.

  • Organize your findings in a report and present them.

Toetsing (Assessment)

The mark on the course is evaluated as follows:

  • Quizzes: 20% (1quiz/session, total 10 quizzes, bonus marks may be available): lowest score is dropped and replaced by the average of the rest of the quiz scores (this makes it possible to skip a quiz -in case of illness, or force majeure!)

  • Homework 20% (1set/topic, total 4 tests, marked out 110 ).

  • Project: 60% (30% project report, 30% presentation)
o Every project report gets one mark. This means that one shares mark with partner.
o Individual mark for the presentation.
The course uses continuous assessment. No exam (and thus no retake) are foreseen.
N.B. Due to the nature of the assessment an honor's code applies. This means that a student must certify that what they submit own work in compliance with the University's code of conduct on fraud and plagiarism.
