Field school 2

Course
2018-2019

Year

Bachelor year 2.

Admission requirements

Field school 1 and at least 45 ec of the BA1 Archaeology programme obtained.

For non-Leiden students: equivalent (basic) level in archaeological excavation techniques.

Description

Field School 2 offers an advanced level of fieldwork skills. During the field school, practical skills are practised in the field. These skills include excavation, surveying, drilling and the related field recording techniques. All Faculty field projects are part of Field School 2, but you are allowed to go to a field project that is organised by another organisation. However, you should ask the specific region coordinator permission in advance (more than 6 weeks before the internship starts).

You can choose any of the available Faculty field projects, but you should make sure that the skills practised, together show sufficient diversity of type and level of skills. These acquired skills can be enhanced by developing them even further during the internship in the BA3.

In order to obtain the 10 ec, you need to participate in 2 different projects of 17 days/5 ec each. The first project should be an excavation/fieldwork, the other project can be spent on a different area of work, such as a laboratory or museum.
Fieldwork that lasts longer than 17 days is only counted as 5 ec, the remaining ec will be stated on the diploma as extra-curricular.

For more information about the individual projects of Field School 2, please contact the region coordinators directly – they can advise you in detail about regional fieldwork and will mark the individual reports.
The general internship coordinator, Richard Jansen, can advise you on the rules and regulations.
Enrol yourself in the BlackBoard module to stay informed about internship positions on offer.

Fieldwork is allowed only outside the teaching schedules.
