In Leiden, art and literature have been since long studied as elements of a larger, shared cultural domain, not as autonomous media. The Research Master Study of Art and Literature is based on the assumption that literary as well as artistic practices are cultural practices that need a shared theoretical and methodological framework. Although distinctive specialisations have been developed for the Study of Art and for the Study of Literature, part of the programme is combined – and to some extend specifically comparative – to underline the affinity between the two disciplines.

The Study of Art and Literature consists of :

  • Two obligatory core courses;

  • Courses within the electives of the Period of specialization, Medieval and Early Modern Culture or Modern/Contemporary Culture, or the Intercultural approach;

  • Courses within the electives of the Discipline of specialization. There are several disciplines from which one can choose electives of the Discipline of specialization, depending on the choosen track:

The programme offers two tracks: - Art History
