Objectives

The objectives of the Research master’s programme in Classics and Ancient Near Eastern Civilisations are:

  1. the broadening and deepening of knowledge, insight, skills and use of methodology in the field of Classics and Near Eastern civilizations studies;
  2. the furtherance of academic and professional training; – to solve scholarly problems in an independent way, critically and creatively, and – to report research results with clarity both orally and in writing;
  3. preparation for an academic career in universities, and/ or post-graduate education and for functions outside of academe in the public or private sector in which advanced research skills and substantial practical research experience are among qualifications required.
  4. preparation for a professional career.

Programme

Structure
The programme of the Research Master Classics and Ancient Near Eastern Civilisations comprises a number of components. The study load runs up to 120 ECTS and is divided over four semesters:

  • Core courses (20 ECTS)

  • Track electives (60 ECTS)

  • Tutorial in preparation for the thesis (10 ECTS)

  • Presentation and research proposal (5 ECTS)

  • Thesis (25 ECTS)

Specialisations

Apart from the obligatory core courses, a student of the Research Master programme follows a number of tracks electives within the programme. Though some of these track electives are shared with the regular MA-programmes, students in the Researchmaster follow these courses at a more advanced level.
Each track focuses on one of 5 specialisations. These specialisations are:

  • Assyriology

  • Classics

  • Egyptology

  • Hebrew Bible Studies

  • New Testament and Early Christian Studies
    To complete the specialisation for which you have been accepted, you will have to accumulate 60 ECTS and a thesis in your field of specialisation. A number of track electives can be replaced by a stay abroad.

Master’s thesis and requirements for graduation

In order to graduate, students must have successfully completed the 120 ects programme and have completed their final thesis as a component of that programme. The thesis is worth 25 ects, and is preceded by a tutorial in preparation for the thesis (10 ECTS) in the first semester.
