Only BA TCI graduated students have direct access to the Master Indonesian Studies, all students with a BA certificate from a institute of Higher Education or Higher Vocational Education should complete a pre-master programme to be allowed to enter in the master programme.

The one-year MA in Indonesian Studies is an intensive study of Southeast Asia ,with a strong focus on Indonesia, which emphasises particular disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. The programme will teach you to work directly with materials from the area, and study in detail the rich and diverse linguistic and cultural landscape of maritime Indonesia.

The programme Master Indonesian Studies is separated into two tracks:

  1. ASEP: Asean Society, Economy and Politics
    1. Indonesian and Malay Studies

Objectives

The master’s programme in Indonesian Studies consists of a year of intensive study of Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. Two tracks are offered: ASEP: Asean Society, Economy and Politics and Indonesian and Malay Studies. A characteristic feature of the programme is that it enables and stimulates the students to work directly with materials from Indonesia. The programme prepares students for a career in international relations, the public sector, the media or creative industries; or for advanced research in the fascinating field of Indonesian Studies.

The programme aims to raise students to a level of knowledge and skills that allows them to proceed to PhD research. Alternatively, graduates qualify for positions outside the university that require an academic level of thinking.

Programme

All students follow the course Politics of culture (10 ects), take an optional course or tutorial (10 ects) and work on their MA thesis (20 ects). Students of the ASEP track follow four more courses: two in the first semester: Economic Development and Culture Seminar: History (together 10 ects); and two in the second semester: Political Economy of Southeast Asia, and Environment and Development (together 10 ects). Students of the Indonesian and Malay Studies track choose two 10 ects courses, one in the first semester and one in the second semester in a discipline of their choice (linguistics, art history, literary studies, media studies).

Master’s thesis and requirements for graduation

The master’s thesis is researched and written under individual supervision. It addresses a topic of the student’s choice within the chosen focus and field of disciplinary specialisation. The maximum length of the thesis is 17,000 words. The thesis should develop an argument with regard to a significant topic within the student’s field of specialisation.
