Linguistics: Comparative Indo-European Linguistics

This is a specialization within the MA Linguistics. It aims to offer a broad spectrum of courses on subjects related to Indo-European linguistics. Some of the courses focus on the grammar, philology, cultural background and history of a specific Indo-European language, while other courses concentrate on the reconstruction of the common ancestor of the Indo-European languages and the development of this ancestor into the various daughter languages. At the beginning of the academic year, a personal program will be chosen that is tailored to the areas of interest and prior knowledge of the student. Students with an interest in Greek, Indo-Iranian or Anatolian historical linguistics can combine the courses below with electives to form their own specialized MA program.

The personal program consists of one of the two basic programs, complemented with up to four additional courses. Program 1 is primarily intended for students with limited prior knowledge of Indo-European linguistics. Program 2 is primarily intended for students with a background in Indo-European studies.

Any questions about this specialiasation within the MA Linguistics can be addressed to Pui Chi Lai, coordinator of studies.
