Science Based Business, 2018-2019

Introduction

The minor Science Based Business will provide you with knowledge and skills in the area of management and entrepreneurship. There is an increasing demand for employees with a science background, who are also versed in the basics of business administration. This is not only the case among R&D-intensive companies, but also among consultancies, banks and public sector organizations. Next to training you in the use of the ‘managerial’ and ‘entrepreneurial’ toolbox, this minor can also help you in your decision on the type of master degree and career you want to pursue after you have graduated as a BSc. Upon finishing this minor, you will have developed:

  • basic knowledge of business administration with a focus on issues in technology-driven companies;
  • insight into the relationships between science, research and business;
  • a better appreciation of career prospects for scientists in business;
  • skills in applying concepts and theories from strategy, marketing, finance and technology & operations management;
  • experience with recognising, assessing, and developing actual business opportunities and with writing a business plan.

The minor emphasises small-scale, interactive teaching, that connects with management practice. This means opportunities for students to learn through real-life business case discussions, company visits, and guest speakers.

Enrollment and placement

The SBB minor is open to all Bachelor students who successfully completed their first year of studies from the universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam (with or without a background in science).

This minor has a maximum capacity of 90 students. Participants will be selected on a first-come first-serve basis.

Please be advised this minor is full-time and class attendance is mandatory.

All students need to apply for the minor by filling out the SBB registration form.

Students from Leiden University
Students also need to register for the minor via uSis. Click here for instructions.

Registration in uSis (class number/studieactiviteit: 1279) starts on May 1st, 2018 from 7:00 am.
Note: Registration in uSis does not directly mean that you can participate in the minor. You will receive an e-mail that confirms your registration and placement.

Students from Rotterdam & Delft
EUR and TUD students can apply in the period of May 1st until May 31st via both our registration form AND the university application form. Please fill in both forms. The first is for our administration, whereas the latter is the official application form of Leiden University.

As part of the agreement between the universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam, one-third of the places in this minor will be reserved for EUR and TUD students in May. If there are places left, these will be given to waitlisted students in June.

Students from other universities
In principle, the minor is also open to (international) students from other universities. You will need to register as a guest student, see more information here.

We will do our best to accommodate waitlisted students who will receive further news about their registration by the end of June.

Courses

The programme for the 30 EC SBB minor consists of basic courses in management and entrepreneurship:

Management courses
The management courses familiarize students with the basic managerial toolbox and provide an introduction to key concepts and frameworks across the following management subfields: strategy, marketing, finance, and technology & operations management.

  • Strategy (5 EC, level 300)
  • Marketing (3 EC, level 300)
  • Financial Management (3 EC, level 300)
  • Technology and Operations Management (4 EC, level 300)

The management courses are offered twice per year; during the first block of the first semester and during the first block of the second semester (if the number of applicants ≥ 20).
UPDATE: the management courses will NOT be offered in the second semester due to insufficient applications.

Entrepreneurship courses
The entrepreneurship courses familiarize students with the basic ‘entrepreneurial toolbox’ and covers 1) how to frame, find and assess entrepreneurial opportunities for new technology ventures; 2) the ins and outs of the entrepreneurial process of creating technology-based companies; and 3) how to write a business plan for a technology start-up.

  • Entrepreneurial Opportunities (5 EC, level 300)
  • Entrepreneurial Process (5 EC, level 300)
  • Entrepreneurial Planning (5 EC, level 300)

The entrepreneurship courses are only offered during the second block of the first semester.

Half minor

Half minor of 15 EC
Students who do not have the full 30 EC available can choose to do a half minor of 15 EC, either the Management courses (uSis class number/studieactiviteit: 1838 for semester 1 or 6936 for semester 2) OR the Entrepreneurship courses (uSis class number/studieactiviteit: 1839).
Please only use these class numbers to register for a half minor. A registration for two half minors does not equal a registration for a full minor.

Combined minor with EUR/TUD
The minors of 15 EC at EUR/TUD are offered in the first block of the first semester. Therefore, students who wish to combine such a minor with our half minor can choose to follow the Entrepreneurship courses. Since our minor is full-time, it is not possible to combine the EUR/TUD minor with the Management courses in the first semester. However, it is possible to follow the Management courses in the second semester if this fits within the student's bachelor programme.
